http://groups.msn.com/classicrown/info60series.msnw">Classic Crown

Not a great machine but the ultimate in Japanese big-car kitsch. A wonderfully baroque piece of mid-Pacific styling, the Crown coupe is a sharp reminder of why so few big Japanese barges were sold in this country until the advent of the Lexus. It looked like a giant tin toy, with its step bonnet, wraparound flashers, pillarless side windows and excessive chrome - and, inside, the cars featured acres of slithery, sticky vinyl. But what they lacked in taste these cars made up for, to a certain extent, with gadgets: electric locks, air-conditioning, a cooler box in the boot and power windows were all standard.

Powered by an unremarkable, 2.6-litre, straight-six engine, all Crowns were autos and many had power steering. They weren't lively machines, struggling to reach 100 mph, but as relaxing wafters they had their merits. What's more, the handling wasn't as bad as you might have expected. Then again, it wasn't that good either. The British club knows of 20 or so Coupe survivors.

The Toyota Crown, a Most Unlikely Classic

Not appreciated in the US or Europe but much-loved elsewhere

http://z.about.com/d/vintagecars/1/0/2/8/tcrown_chile.jpg" style="border:0;"/>

Would all members of the Toyota Crown club please stand up! Okay, wishful thinking on my part because there is no such thing in Canada or the US. I'm not even certain there's a Toyota Crown car in North America, though I'd be delighted to be proven wrong.

The rest of the world, however, does have an affection for old Crown sedans and other old Toyotas because the rest of the world has not been brainwashed into thinking the only worthy collectible must be a muscle car or European classic. Thanks to New Zealand friend Mark Dawber my attention was drawn to the affection many folks still have for Toyota Crowns.

Because of some unusual circumstances in Toronto and later as an ex-pat in England, I'm not exactly unaware of the Crown. I first saw one during a brief period as ad manager for a company that had been set up to import Toyotas and Isuzus. Why brief? Well, as a creative guy I had no talent for managing anything except ideas. And once into the job I over-rode the chosen ad agency and hired moonlighting writers and art directors.

The agency was not known for its creative, and the guys I liked worked for the hottest shop in Canada. My boss had no empathy with innovative advertising and soon tossed me out on my ear. Probably a good thing as not long after I went into the agency business as a writer and eventually creative director. Ah, but the Crown, now that was an interesting car...

Subtle styling hides a step up in luxury

http://z.about.com/d/vintagecars/1/0/4/8/tcrown_paris.jpg" style="border:0;"/>

When the Toyota Crown was revealed I was stunned. Japanese autos were basic economy cars. The Crown, by today's standards, would qualify as a mid-size sedan and by yesterday's standards was nicely finished, spacious, and comparable in some respects to a Buick. The styling lacked excitement but Toyota knew then as it does now what really matters to the average buyer.

I was even more astonished when I saw the other Toyota we were to promote. For us the only big, rugged 4-wheel-drive vehicles came from Jeep and Land Rover so imagine my surprise when shown a big, rugged Japanese vehicle called the Land Cruiser. You all know what happened with that one.

To be honest, I never got to drive either Toyota. However, after being dropped by the importer, I was given an Isuzu Bellett for a few weeks and genuinely liked that car, a small 4-door sedan with the roadholding and precision steering we normally associated with European imports. The transmission was a bit of a grinder but otherwise the Bellett was fun. Isuzu could make good cars and how sad it was when the company got messed around by current owner GM.

But my affair with the Crown was not over. After breaking into the ad game I moved to New York and was subsequently transferred to London as creative director of J. Walter Thompson's European Accounts Group. This move introduced new friends, including a couple who'd developed a concept of rental cars exclusive to business executives. The cars? Toyota Crowns.

A gentleman's rental car

http://z.about.com/d/vintagecars/1/0/3/8/tcrown_indo.jpg" style="border:0;"/>

Jan and Michelle Silchenstedt had a business plan that still sounds good. Visiting execs with decent expense accounts, they felt, would prefer to avoid the Hertz/Avis/etc. routine in favor of a personalised rental. Said rental car had to be reasonably luxurious but not so extravagant as to arouse the suspicions of corporate bean-counters.

It was also the ideal vehicle for a clandestine date. Like many North American men I could easily be flattered by attractive females, especially if they were charming and intelligent and had a cultured English accent. Such a lady, Sarah Kershaw, worked in the offices above. Whatever possessed me to think she would enjoy a day at the Farnborough Air Show I cannot imagine except that it is one of the top three in the world, a place where airliner and warplane manufacturers unveil their latest.

But Sarah loved the show and was suitably impressed by the borrowed Toyota Crown in all its right-hand-drive majesty. Our brief romantic fling ended the same day although recently I noted a Sarah Kershaw contributing to the New York Times from Seattle, just south of where I live in BC. Friends in the UK tell me she migrated to the US west coast years ago. Could it be?

As for the Crown, it morphed into the Cressida, which was sold here in limited numbers and later merged with the Camry. I can still see hints of the Crown in the Camry's styling and sometimes imagine Sarah in the passenger's seat with a 767 performing a low-and-over.
